Twelve fence businesses show on Google’s map for your city, and only three make it into the box at the top of Google, the three businesses a homeowner sees before anything else. You probably found this page by searching fence company SEO Jacksonville, but your customers are not searching for an agency. They search for a fence, and they call one of those three. Below is who holds those spots today, what it would take to join them, and where each number came from.
Key Takeaway
Three fence businesses hold the box at the top of Google, out of 12 on the map and 191 fence businesses listed locally. The leader has 846 reviews. The third spot is held with just 33. So 34 good reviews and a properly set up profile put that slot within reach, without chasing the leader. About 210 people a month search for fencing in your city by name of the trade. Advertisers pay around $5.61 for each click on that search, yet no ads were showing when we checked. That is a valuable search with an open door.
Fence company SEO Jacksonville: why can you be first on Google and still get no calls?
Because the box at the top and the plain blue links underneath are two separate systems, and ranking in one does nothing for the other.
The box, which marketers call the map pack, is fed by your Google Business Profile. That is the free listing that shows your pin, your reviews and your phone number. It weighs how close you are to the person searching, how many reviews you have, and how active the profile is.
The plain blue links underneath are fed by your website. They weigh what your pages say and the links pointing at them from other sites. You can be first in one and missing from the other.
When we checked, 12 fence businesses showed on the map, out of 191 fence businesses listed locally. The box sits above the blue links, and every listing in it carries a call button. That is where a homeowner picking a fence company often decides.
| What decides it | The box at the top | The links below |
| The biggest factor | How close you are to the person searching | What your pages say, and links from other sites |
| Reviews | Count, rating and how recent they are all weigh in | Little direct effect |
| How long it takes to move | Weeks for fixes, months to widen your reach | Usually months |
| The next town over | Your listing fades with distance from your pin | A good page about that town can rank there |
Good local SEO in Jacksonville means working on both, in the right order. For a fence business, the profile usually comes first, because changes there tend to show sooner.
Why doesn’t searching your own business name prove anything?
Your own name only shows you what people who already know you see; new customers search for the work, not for you.
Your name will nearly always come up. Google knows it is you. That tells you nothing about strangers.
About 210 people a month search “fencing jacksonville”. Those are homeowners in your area looking for fencing, not for you by name. Many more add a word on the end: near me, cost, installation, companies, per foot. Each of those is its own search, and each one decides who gets the call.
In a city of 1,009,831 people, that is not a huge number of searches. That is exactly why the three spots matter so much. When the pool is small, being in the box or not is the difference between hearing from those people and never knowing they looked.
Your search and theirs are different. When you looked for help, you may have typed fencing SEO near me. When they look for a fence, they type the fence.
To test it properly, search the way a customer would. Use your phone, standing somewhere you want work. Try “vinyl fence installation” or “fence repair near me”. If you are not in the box there, a stranger will not find you there either.
Why do you disappear from Google one town over?
Google ranks your map listing around the pin at your address, and your pull fades the further a searcher is from that pin.
This is the part nobody explains. Google does not show your listing across your whole service area. It shows it to people near your pin, then it drops away.
Setting a service area on your profile tells customers where you work. It does not make Google rank you there. Plenty of owners set a 30 mile radius and assume they are covered. They are not.
Think of a circle round your yard. Inside it, you compete on reviews and relevance. Outside it, businesses with pins closer to the searcher win, even with fewer reviews than you.
For a fence business based in your city, the usual picture looks like this. The distances are straight line, not driving distance.
A homeowner in Neptune Beach who searches for a fence sees businesses near Neptune Beach first. Your listing may not appear at all, even though you would happily drive there tomorrow.
Your own city is big, too. A search from one side of town is not the same search as one from the other side. A pin can be strong in its own neighborhood and invisible a few miles away.
So how do you reach further out? Four things move it:
- The right category: your main category set to Fence contractor, with services listed for wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum and ornamental, and repair and replacement.
- A real page per town: one page for each town you want, about the work you do there.
- Reviews from those towns: customers there, writing about their own job in their own words.
- Photos from real jobs: your own fences, not stock pictures.
A town page has to be real. Copying one page and swapping the town name does little, because Google has seen that trick many times. A page for Atlantic Beach should talk about jobs you have done there and show photos from them.
A lot of local SEO in Florida gets sold as if one listing covers a whole metro. It does not. Coverage widens one area at a time, and you should be able to see it on a map grid, which is a map showing where you appear and where you do not.
An HVAC company ranked around its own pin, not across its service area, until coverage was extended across the Greater London service area town by town, with 564 Google Search Console clicks.
The further the town, the slower it comes. Orange Park is the closest of the three, so it should come in first. The two beach towns sit further off and take longer.
If a town is full of fence businesses with pins right there, you may never hold the top spot in it. That is fine. Showing in the box some of the time beats never showing.
Want to see where your listing shows and where it drops off, town by town?
How many reviews do you actually need to get into the top three?
To pass the weakest of the top three today, you need 34 reviews, not hundreds, because distance and relevance count as much as the total.
Here is who held the box when we checked the map:
| Business | Reviews | Rating | Has a website |
| Superior Fence & Rail | 846 | 4.9 | Yes |
| Masters Quality Fence | 206 | 5.0 | Yes |
| Specialty Fence Wholesale LLC | 33 | 4.5 | Yes |
The median in the top three is 206. The leader has 846. But the third spot is held by a business with 33 reviews and a 4.5 rating. It sits beside a business with 846. Review count alone did not decide it.
So you do not need to match the leader. You need to be close to the searcher, in the right category, and in range on reviews. At 34 good reviews, you pass the weakest listing on count.
How you get them matters. Ask every customer the day the last panel goes up, and send a direct link. Reply to every review, good or bad. Reviews that mention the job in the customer’s own words help Google match you to the searches for that work.
Why does a worse-looking fence website outrank yours?
Google ranks what it can understand and trust, not what looks nicest, so a plain site that clearly explains the work can beat a polished one.
Every one of the 12 listings on the map had a website when we checked. None of the top three is missing one. So a website gets you nothing extra here. It is the entry ticket.
What separates sites is what they say. You want a page for each thing you sell: wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum and ornamental, repair and replacement. You want pages that answer what people type after the trade: cost, installation, per foot. A slick homepage with one line about quality fencing gives Google nothing to match.
Those pages also handle the hard conversations before the phone rings. When a homeowner is holding a cheaper big box quote, a page showing what is in your price does the arguing for you: the posts, the depth, the permit, the cleanup. If you measure every job on site yourself, say so, and say why it saves them money. If permits come up on every job, one plain page on how the permit process works saves you having the same talk twenty times.
That is what fence marketing in Jacksonville should look like. Pages that answer real questions, not a redesign.
What happens to your listing if you move premises?
Google will likely ask you to verify the listing again, and you should move the existing profile rather than open a new one.
Change the address on the profile you already have. Do not create a second listing. Two listings for one business can hold both down. Expect a dip while Google checks the new address; it may ask for a video or another form of verification.
Then update the address everywhere else it appears: your website and every directory. Remember the circle moves with you. Towns you showed in may fade, and new ones come into reach.
Who are you actually up against for fence jobs?
Mostly other real fence businesses, not directories, which means the plain blue links can be won with good pages.
When we checked the top ten blue links, seven were pages from fence specialists and two were directories. The top three were jaxaafencing.com, fenceoutlet.com and jacksonvillefencingclub.com, all local businesses. Going by its name, that third one looks like a club for the sport of fencing, not yards. Google is not certain what “fencing” means in that search, which is one more reason your pages should say fence installation in plain words.
The two directories are worth being listed on. Fighting them is not worth it. The real fight is the other fence businesses, and on the map you are one of 12 drawn from 191 fence businesses listed locally.
Be honest with yourself here. If you work a few miles round your yard, already have more than 200 good reviews, and the phone is full, you may not need anyone. Spend the money on another truck. This is for owners who want more of the right calls, from further out, than they get now.
What this means for you
Your competition is real fence businesses with websites and reviews. You win with better pages and a stronger profile, not by outspending anyone.
What does an SEO agency in Jacksonville cost for a fence business?
It costs $1,250 a month, and you should be able to check whether that pays for itself before you sign.
You should not have to sit through a sales call to learn the number. So here it is, and here is what it pays for.
The work is the same work this page describes: the profile, the pages, the reviews, and a report you can read.
$1,250 per month
- Google Business Profile work: category, services, photos and updates
- Pages for each fence type and each town you want to reach
- A plain, rule-following way to ask every customer for a review
- A monthly map grid showing where you appear and where you do not
Now the arithmetic, so you can check it. About 210 people a month search for fencing in your city. Advertisers pay about $5.61 a click on that search. Not everyone who searches clicks. If you bought a quarter of those clicks with ads, that is about 52 clicks, costing roughly $295 a month.
On that one phrase, ads look cheaper. But they stop the day the card does. And they cover one phrase, not near me, cost, installation, per foot, or the box at the top.
The other side of it: our figures put an average fence job at about $4,000. To cover $1,250 a month, the work needs to bring in about 4.2 extra leads a month. Not jobs. Leads, some of which you will win.
Before you pay any agency, ask for three numbers. How many people in your area search for your service each month. What a click on that search costs. How many extra leads the work must bring to pay for itself. Any SEO services in Jacksonville worth paying for should come with those three numbers up front.
How long before a fence SEO company in Jacksonville gets you calls?
Plan on three to six months to hold the box near your own address, and nine to twelve months before towns further out and the plain blue links come in.
Some profile fixes show in weeks. A wrong category or a duplicate listing can hold you down, and clearing it is fast. The rest is slow.
Why that range? The paid competition score on that search is 0.87, on a scale where 1 is the most contested. That tells you advertisers see real money in it, and the businesses already in the box have reason to defend their spots. It is a sign of commercial value, not proof that SEO will be hard.
The leader also has 846 reviews. You will not pass that quickly, and you do not need to. The weakest spot is the realistic first target.
There is no off season to race. With an average winter low of 47.8°F, posts go in all year. The 54.1 inches of rain a year will hit your schedule more than the calendar will. Start when you are ready, not in a rush.
What is the one thing that will get your Google profile suspended?
Offering anything in exchange for a review breaks Google’s rules and can get the listing you depend on suspended.
This will get your profile suspended
Never pay for a review. Never offer a discount, a prize draw entry, or a bonus to the crew member a customer names. It breaches Google’s policy, and it risks the one listing your calls come from. We will not set it up, and if you are doing it now, we will tell you to stop.
Just ask. Ask every customer, make it easy, and take the bad reviews with the good.
A 4.5 rating can still hold a top spot, as the table above shows. Honest reviews are enough.
SEO for fence companies, and the other trades we work in
The mechanics are the same across trades; what changes is the category set, the words customers use and the season.
A fence contractor and a roofer both live or die by the box at the top. The difference is which categories Google offers, what homeowners type, and when they type it. You can see the trades we publish work for:
- Fencing
- Auto repair
- HVAC and heating
- Roofing
- Dental and healthcare
- Pest control
- Landscaping
Will you show up when someone asks an AI for a fence company?
Test it yourself: ask an AI assistant for the best fence company in Jacksonville and see whether your name comes back.
AI assistants and Google’s own AI answers increasingly summarize local options instead of listing ten links. They build those answers from the same things the box at the top reads: your Google Business Profile, your categories and services, your reviews, and pages that describe your work in plain words.
So there is nothing separate to buy. The work that gets you into the box is the same work that gets your name into those answers. Nobody can promise you will appear, and we will not.
